Generally, the shape of the last used for sneakers is designed more for manufacturing efficiency than for giving shape. However, the case of the last used in Bluestone sneakers, is designed with the fit in mind. We have produced a shape with strong curves, which is grounded in leather footwear. The design of the heel in particular is the same as that of leather footwear – the air is pushed out when you put the sneakers on. This is a characteristic not expected from sneakers.

For the pattern of the Bluestone sneakers to be reproduced accurately, a shirring technique is applied. We make patterns of different lengths and with subtle differences in curves, by hand. With the experience of our artisans, the latest techniques, and by identifying any scratches, unevenness in colour and the direction of the stretch, the SUKUMO Leather is carefully and accurately cut.

The idea is to retain the solid shape, without sacrificing the soft, flexible texture of the SUKUMO Leather. To make that possible, the thick and firm ‘case leather’ creates a structure that faithfully reproduces the line of the last and supports the SUKUMO Leather on the surface. The ability to sew and at the same time shirr complex parts demands a sophisticated technique that only artisans with an understanding of patterns can accomplish.

By using a pair of pliers known to Japanese shoemakers as a ‘crocodile’, a tool not often seen nowadays, the outer leather and lining leather are pulled over the sneakers separately. The lining leather keeps the line of the last as well as enables the outer leather to act as the surface. By adjusting the heel and without losing its shape, the lining leather takes on the shape of the wearer’s own feet, creating a perfect fit. Through the slightest of movements that only experience can bring, these two kinds of leather with their different physical qualities are closed, one sneaker at a time.

The sole and upper are sown together in a way to make them easily removable, so damaged soles can be replaced and the sneakers can therefore be worn for many years.
